Karl’s Thoughts: Divas and Female Wrestling.
Karl’s Thoughts: Divas and female wrestling.

Hello fellow readers of WrestleHustle.com,

Now you are probably wondering what is this you are reading, as you have ever never seen this before. That’s ok, I will explain. My name is Karl Hanaghan and I am a typical aussie guy who is a fan of professional wrestling. I will be running a weekly column here and I will be giving you my thoughts on wrestling in general. I hope to add a bit of interactivity on here in the future also. What I have in mind is you, our fellow readers, can email me questions to ask for my opinion on certain things in wrestling and I will select a few and answer them in future columns. Depending on how many I get, I may just have a whole column on answering them here in between my own columns. Also I may review a wrestling show here and there. So hopefully it will add a bit of variety. Anyway without wasting any more time on introductions, it is time to enter my mind on this subject. The subject being ‘Divas and female wrestling.

You hear the name a lot now as it has been used frequently by WWE and that is Divas. It seems lately WWE does not take its selection in female wrestlers seriously and relay more on a feast for the eyes, than the actual talent. I can understand the word ‘entertainment’ WWE uses in its name and I agree you need both to make a successful product, but when does it become too much entertainment and too eye candy? Lance Storm who is in my mind a brilliant technical wrestler believes there is a future for female wrestlers and proudly supports it. Like him, I do too. But I think WWE is over clogging the beauty part and giving them many matches that look more like cat fights. New comers unfortunately will not realise the potential we once had there and what female wrestlers can be capable of in general. It’s practically most of the Diva roster with the exception of a few that bring it down. Lately the requirements for Divas have become another joke to WWE. Those requirements they have in my mind are they have to look like a model and can do a couple of moves. To add to it, we have a Diva’s championship belt that has a butterfly on it. That to me is a spit on all these great female wrestlers out there. Seems like WWE is so concerned about ‘entertainment’ that they are making the female division look like a product from playboy.

I remember growing up, I use to see some great female wrestlers who rely more on wrestling to show what they are truly capable of. Chyna was a massive name in my mind that I could never forget. Her physique was different to most to females. Plus she was one who could hang with the boys and she did. Jeff Jarrett and Chyna having a feud was a step up and a positive direction for the world of female wrestling. My belief has always been, a good female wrestler can not only hang well with her female peers but the men as well. It’s a shame we don’t see that anymore. Chyna was also the first female to win a title that is given to men, which is the I.C. title. She was also the first female to enter a royal rumble. Now when you think about it... WWE had evolved female wrestling (Wrestling matches, not the sex and story content.) in the attitude era and once that was over, they turned back the evolution process till we are down to this. What were they thinking?!

A lot of people I have spoken to think most of the divas are terrible. Not just girls though, quite a few guys also. It’s clear it’s more about the eye candy than anything else with the WWE. It sells right? But a lot of wrestling fans are actually fans of the wrestling. So are you drawing more people in? Or are you annoying more fans? I think personally you are losing either way. What you gain is what you have lost. You can have beautiful people that have great athletic ability and talent that will satisfy both aspects, and makes the fan base bigger in my mind. But at the same time, you can’t discriminate against those who are more talent than lookers. They can still satisfy many of us who care more about real wrestling. Wrestling beats looks any day. I have heard of female wrestlers who do hardcore matches and work very hard to put their bodies on the line and that amazes me they don’t see limitations cause of gender. I have seen a video on facebook where this female does a moonsault double stomp onto another female. Whatever her name was who took the move, she is a legend for taking that bump. These are a couple examples of what can be done in this great industry from the female side.

We still do have some great female wrestlers past and present and a few that are on my mind at the moment are Awesome Kong, Lita, Chyna, Beth Pheonix, Victoria/Tara, Luna Valcon (R.I.P.) and Australia’s own Bombshell Bo. There are many more of course, but they are just what are on my mind while writing this. So much potential can be found for the future of female wrestling in many places. If you look hard enough, you will find girls that are not only just as good as the males, but are able to excel it. I like to see heart and soul, going as far as they can and what I would really love is matches that can be worked well with males versus females. There are many girls out there that are showing us real wrestling; you just might not find many in WWE though these days though. But there are other places. Search and I guarantee you, you will not regret it.

That’s all for now fellow readers. Comments, questions and suggestions can be emailed to me at karl_wrestlehustle©hotmail.com I hope to see you back here next week. Till then, I am an Aussie wrestling fan named Karl Hanaghan and these are my thoughts.

Aftermath of Southern Impact 2010
Aftermath of Southern Impact 2010

In the aftermath at what occurred at Southern Impact 2010 - New Horizon Pro Wrestling is in shock after the Art of Fighting Championship was relinquished because of long term injury to Mana the Polynesian Warrior.

The title was made vacant and to be filled by who ever won the Main Event match that night between "The Playa from the Himalaya" Sonjay Dutt, "TEC" Percy T and "Island Warhorse" Tama Williams. Tama Williams won that title by pinning arch rival Percy T following it by beating Sonjay Dutt the very next night in an absolutely brutal match to stamp his dominance as NHPW Art of Fighting Champion.

The Indygurlz (Aust) title was no different with - The battle between Bombshell Bo, "Everybody's Favourite Girlfriend" Jessie McKay and Awesome Kong was as the name of Kong suggests .... AWESOME!!!
It did not come with out its problems though - Kong was confronted by leader of "The Reality" Jaxon James before the match began. Kong was ultra aggressive in destroying Jaxon James very quickly then Implant Busting his valet Eden right on top of Jaxon James in what quite literally was the pop of the night.
James has been openly complaining about the Indygurlz women's division and quite obviously bit off way more than he could chew !!!
The matchup between the girls was nothing short of stunning and after an immense battle which saw all three potential girls going so close for pins to win it unfortunately it was gatecrashed. After last week being omitted from even challenging for the Title out of nowhere "Rate Tank" Kellie Skater attacked Amazing Kong with vicious kicks to the knee and head of Kong giving enough time for Bombshell Bo to splash Kong from the ropes for the win. The crowd was not impressed by this new women's tandem and in the end Kong Awesome Bombed the new Champion into oblivion. Awesome Kong has said this is not the last you will see of her - she will be back in NHPW and she will take Bombshells head ....

MANA speaking on Final Chapter 2010

Statement:
Its is time, Final Chapter 2010 will be the end of a career - Mana The Polynesian Warrior is leaving for good. This isn't a gimmick, this isn't any set up - my body can no longer handle the rigors of the Pro Wrestling Ring. I came to this realisation some time ago but wanted time to organise the best show I could to complete my career. There are so many people I want to Thank for blessing me and my NHPW Family by coming here to say Goodbye ... You will see in the next few weeks who is coming and why they are true family to me.

These people trained with me, hit the roads with me and spent time with me to help forge what I became in Pro Wrestling. I am so thankful they will be here to put on two shows for me and you, the NHPW Fans, the best show for us of 2010. I gear up one last time on November 19 and celebrate with the rest of you on November 20th.

My hope is that everyone in the wrestling community can come together one last time before I call time on my wrestling career and look forward to those who are performing on the show to give the fans all they can of themselves like I always have tried to do for them my whole life. I know they will ....

To everyone who will be attending Final Chapter 2010 - Thanks with all my heart and to all the warriors that will do battle in the ring for my last show, much respect.
You are the future and I appreciate all of you being here in Perth Western Australia for my Final Chapter.

One Love ...
MANA

Jim Ross Comments On Lucna Vachon
jrsbarbq.com

It is said that death comes in three's. Apparently that's morbidly correct. Upon hearing of Luna Vachon's passing this morning came another reminder that no one is guaranteed tomorrow.

The exact cause of Luna's passing has not been determined but 48 is much too young for anyone to be taken from this world and our sincere condolences go out to Luna's family and the many friends that she had in and out of the wrestling business.

When Luna reported to me in WWE's talent relations department many, many years ago she was a hard working, passionate, almost obsessive performer who definitely had the wrestling business in her blood.

Her family, the Vachon's, will always be known as one of the best known 'wrestling families' ever in the business. Her father, Paul (Butcher), and her famous uncle, Maurice (Mad Dog) Vachon were stars for decades.

Luna told me that being a wrestler was the only thing that she wanted to do since she was a small child. She said she couldn't remember the time when she didn't want to wrestle for a living.

Inside the ring was where Luna seemingly felt the most comfortable with herself both professionally and personally. She was an excellent in ring performer who helped many of her fellow females become better wrestlers.

At times, Luna was very hard on herself when she felt that she didn't have the match that she wanted to have and was more often than not her own worst critic. I found out that praising her and doing what I could do to help her self esteem motivated her to no ends.

While Luna Vachon wasn't perfect, none of us are for the record, she was more often than not fun to be around.

Like many other human beings, Luna was susceptible to personal challenges and WWE assisted on these matters on multiple occasions.

The last time that I saw Luna was in Las Vegas a couple of years or so ago at the Cauliflower Alley Club reunion when Bret Hart was honored and I attended along with Steve Austin. Luna was so happy to see us both. We had our photo taken together and had a great visit. She was driving a tow truck in Florida and Steve and I both enjoyed Luna's 'tow truck stories.'

One could tell that she missed the wrestling business but was pleased that she was an independent woman, had a job and was apparently garnering much needed stability in her life.

We talked about her being diagnosed with being bi-polar and her having issues with depression of which she battled on an on going basis for a good while. Luna was a battler and was a tough individual who said she was going to keep fighting the good fight but that it wasn't easy.  Steve and I both gave Luna many words of encouragement and spent significant time with her at the CAC function talking old times and mostly laughing about our mutual experiences.  Without question, laughter is good medicine for all of us.

I know Luna loved her family, especially her children, and had a twinkle in her eye when talking about them. It was as if she wanted to make up for lost time with her family, especially her sons. Being off the road and working a 'regular job' was going to give her the opportunity to do so.

Luna and I couldn't believe that it had been well over a decade since we had talked as she left WWE, I believe, in 2000 or so. When  one is younger we ask, "Where did the day go?" and when we get older we catch ourself asking, "What happened to that decade?"

Luna Vachon had a unique and often times challenging life but even with the issues that she battled she had many friends who, as will I, always look back upon the good days that we shared.

Perhaps now Luna can finally find peace and tranquility in Heaven where her existence will finally be problem free.

Rest in Peace Luna. You will be missed.

Stephanie McMahon gave birth to her third child Wednesday, a baby girl. The name of the child has yet to be publicly disclosed.

Linda McMahon confirmed earlier this year on her Twitter account that Stephanie was pregnant with her third child after she appeared visibly pregnant at a rally event for her Senate campaign. It was rumored at the time that Stephanie was due in August.

The death of Cade from heart failure, aged only 29, has once again put the spotlight on early deaths in the wrestling business.McMahon is currently running as the Republican candidate for a seat in the US Senate in her home State of Connecticut.

Her connection to the WWE — owned by husband Vince — has drawn fire from her Democrat opponents and some newspaper columnists and bloggers.
However she says the company cannot be held responsible for stars such as Cade dying young. The Connecticut Post reports that when asked if she knew the former WWE Tag Team Champion, McMahon replied: "I might have met him once."Reiterating the details of the WWE's Wellness Program, she then told reporters that WWE can no more be held accountable for deaths of performers "than a film studio could have prevented Heath Ledger's death".

McMahon added: "Who knows what causes people to have addictions and do what they do?"

Latest On Paul Heyman & TNA's Negotiations
Regarding Paul Heyman, there was no movement this past week in the former ECW creative director joining TNA Wrestling. The feeling among many in the organization is that as long as television ratings hold up, Spike officials won't feel the need to pressure the organization in bringing him in.

Heyman insists he won't join the organization without the ability to rebuild the company, and without complete control over marketing, talent and the office, he won't be able to. TNA president Dixie Carter doesn't want to give up control of her company, not to mention that she bears strong loyalty to certain employees, thus explaining why things remain at a standstill. Even some people within TNA who were pulling to bring in Heyman find his demands to be a little much.

The Two Sheds Review: Strikeforce Challengers Riggs v Taylor
THE TWO SHEDS REVIEW by Julian Radbourne – now in it’s 10th year!

A catchweight bout, a four-woman tournament and the debut of the son of a legend were the talking points of Strikeforce’s latest Challengers show, shown this past Monday night on Bravo 2 here in Britain.

The show began with the semi-finals of the tournament to find the number one contender to the Women’s Welterweight title, beginning with Miesha Tate against Maiju Kujala.

Fought over two three minute rounds, this fight featured a controversial moment towards the end of the first when the referee stood the fighters up when Kujala had a guillotine choke applied.

Apart from that we saw a pretty good performance from Tate as she took home the unanimous decision. I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if the referee hadn’t intervened in that first round.

The second semi-final saw Hitomi Akano taking on Carina Damm.

An excellent back and forth grappling battle saw both girls putting on great performances, especially in the first round, a round which was again marred by a questionable stand-up.

Akano took the win in the second after some more impressive ground work and a modified triangle.

Then it was on to action from the lightweight division as Mr. Couture’s baby boy Ryan squared off against Lucas Stark.

A quick fight saw Couture get the take down after a brief feeling out period. Stark soon got to his feet and got a take down of his own, only to quickly find himself in a Couture triangle choke with no means of escape. An impressive performance from debutant.

The women’s welterweight tournament final followed as Miesha Tate faced Hitomi Akano.

This was one of the best ground fights I’ve seen in ages. Fought over three three minute rounds this featured tremendous performances from both girls.

Tate certainly lived up to her nickname with some impressive take downs, with some great defensive work from Akano frustrating her all the way.

But despite Akano’s defensive work it was Tate’s attacks that earned her the unanimous decision, and a possible re-match with Welterweight Champion Sarah Kaufman.

The main even saw Joe Riggs taking on Louis Taylor in a catchweight bout made at 182 pounds.

A fight that didn’t exactly set the world alight to begin with saw two tentative performances in the first two rounds. It was almost as if both fighters were looking for counter moves, with neither man willing to make that first move.

But the fight suddenly came to life in the third when a big right from Riggs rocked Taylor, who tried to recover by going for a clinch against the cage.

This only resulted in a Riggs take down, with Taylor tapping out as Riggs went to work with the ground and pound.

In conclusion – despite the somewhat lacklustre main event, Strikeforce Challengers proved to be a very entertaining show.

The highlight for me was the women’s welterweight tournament, and the performances of Tate and Akano. It was a shame that their fight only lasted nine minutes. Just imagine what those two could have done with three five minute rounds.

So in all a good show, with another one just a few days away.

Jim Kettner Retires From Promoting ECWA
After 43 years of promoting pro wrestling under the East Coast Wrestling Association (ECWA) banner in the state of Delaware, Jim Kettner has retired from the ECWA.  Kettner promoted his first show in 1967 in his backyard and went on to run one of the most successful, consistent, longest running, reliable and recognized independent promotions in the United States.

Kettner was originally trained to wrestle by Victor Riviera, Joe Alfano and Bulldog Brower.  Kettner wrestled for some local independent groups in the late 1970s-early 1980s, but spent most of his time since 1967 developing the ECWA.  In the early days, Kettner did wrestle on his own ECWA shows and is a 2-time ECWA Tag Team Champion.  Kettner also has done some part time training, promoting and other jobs for World Wrestling Entertainemnt (WWE) over the years.

The ECWA is known for many quality talents that have come through the promotion over the years, where Kettner had a hand in training and honing their skills.  Men like Charlie & Russ Haas, Christopher Daniels, Bryan Danielson, Billy Kidman, Steve Corino, Christian, Simon Diamond, and Test as well as hosting appearances by some of the bigger name talents.

The ECWA is best know for it's Super 8 tournament that was established in Feb 22, 1997 and recently hosted it's 14th annual event on July 10, 2010.  The list of wrestlers that have competed in the Super 8 over its history is a who's who in wrestling, men like Jeff & Matt Hardy, Austin Aries, Bryan Danielson, Davey Richards, Ace Darling, Simon Diamond, Reckless Youth, Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles and many more.  In fact, the original Ring of Honor (ROH) style of matches were patterned after the Super 8 styles of matches in the early 2000's and in fact many, many of the talents that Kettner brought to the East Coast for the first time went on to ROH and later Total Non-Stop Action (TNA) Wrestling and WWE.

Jim Kettner's last ECWA show was August 14, 2010.  At his request and insistence, Kettner left quietly and with no fan fare, as he has never been one to put himself in the spotlight.  Jim wanted to convey his thanks and gratitude to all the folks over the years that have been part of the ECWA family and have supported it so faithfully, from the staff, to the ring crew, to family and friends, to the sponsors, to the wrestlers and most importantly the fans.  Jim said that  Jim Kettner is not the ECWA, that no one person is the ECWA, that the ECWA is the collective group of all the people who have been a part of it over the years.

The transfer of daily operations from Jim Kettner to Mike Tartaglia was arranged by Joe Zanolle.  Zanolle, a former pro wrestling referee and currently a photographer for Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) magazine and booker for Mike Tartaglia's Tri-State Wrestling Alliance (TWA) at www.twaprowrestling.com, hase been attending ECWA shows for over 10 years and has also served as a photographer for the ECWA.  The current TWA mirrors the ECWA in many ways as both are family shows that showcase some of the best independent wrestling performers on the East Coast.

Tartaglia and Zanolle plan to run the TWA and ECWA shows as separate events, retaining both names and changing as little as possible, using many of the same names and keeping the rosters separate for the forseeabel future while there will  be some talents switched from one promotion to another and some talents will appear in both promotions.  Tartaglia and Zanolle will maintain many of the ECWA traditions, including it's most highly visible event, the Super 8 which will celebrate it 15th year this year.

The TWA will continue to be based out of the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, New Jersey while the ECWA will continue to be based out of the Newark Boys & Girls Club in Newark, Delaware.

Mike Tartaglia was a wrestler (Mike Bruno) in the original TWA in the early 1990's and competes sporadically in the current TWA.  Tartaglia ressurected the current TWA with a reunion show on October 24, 2009 and has run shows in South Jersey and Pennslyvania over the last year.  The TWA has used WWE legends such as Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, Ax & Smash "Demolition," Al Snow, the Kat/Stacy Carter and Kamala, TWA Originals like "Hitman" Tony Steston, "The Beast" Glen Osbourne and "The Living Legend" Larry Winters, kid's favorites such as Shockwave the Robot, Mr. Ooh La La, The Blue Meanie and Kid America and great local independent talent like TWA Champion Breaker Morant, TWA Tag Team Champions "The Best Around" TJ Cannon & Bruce Maxwell, the Logan Brothers, and "Mr. Wrestling" Steve Corino w/ Rob Dimension.  The TWA has also raised awareness and funds for several charities and has appeared in Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) magazine, The NJ Gloucester County Times Newspaper, the NJ Courier Post Newspaper and on NBC Philly CW57 and NJ 95.7 BEN-FM.

Tartaglia is also a local South Jersey business man and has owned several of his own businesses over the last decade.

Interview With Jason Helton
WH. We usually start of these interviews with the question, how did you get started in Australian Wrestling? But first I want to ask why you decided to stop wrestling in Australia and what are you doing with yourself now?

I’m working in security now at a club. I stopped wrestling because I grew up and got responsible, I have reached a point in my life where I cant take time off my full time job to go and wrestle for less than what I would going to work at the club. I have kids to support and being over 40 now I cant take the risk of getting injured and having to sit at home without pay because I wanted to wrestle. If I was making 500 a match I would keep going but the money isn’t there to make it financially attractive to my family. Yes as much as I enjoy it its a young mans game and I am not one of those anymore. I did mostly what I wanted to do in wrestling and there’s nothing in Australian wrestling that is attractive enough for me to go back to. Everyone I want to wrestle is either retired or I wrestled them already.

WH. So lets go back to the start of your wrestling career and how it all got started?

Well I was always a big fan ever since I went to an AWA show in Winnipeg when I was 11, I moved to Calgary a few years later and got hooked on Stampede wrestling. I went to a show and after the show I met Chris Benoit and we hit it off We hung out after the next few shows and he introduced me to Bruce Hart and after a while Bruce who is a good friend of my dads asked me if I wanted to train with him. I jumped at the chance.

WH. What was it like training with the Hart family and being stretched in the Dungeon?

It was really hard work but it got me in great shape I didn’t know the history of the dungeon when I started I just did what I was told when I was there and tried to learn the art of wrestling as best I could. Now that I have been all over wrestling and I see how much better training I got than most other people I see what a lucky man I was to get the opportunity to go through the dungeon.

WH. Who were some other trainees going through the Dungeon while you were there?

No one you would have heard of Roy Redcrow was the first guy I trained with and then Morris Nepoose.Morris was a good partner to train with He was much fitter than I was and he pushed me to get much better.

WH. What made you come to Australia and what Australian promotions did you first start out with?

I came out to live with my wife who is Australian and I first started out with AWF and IWA

WH. I'm sure you've wrestled some of the more popular names in the Aussie scene. Who has been some of your favorite workers to wrestle against in Australia?

I always liked wrestling Lobo He was the one to put me on the map in Australia We always put on some hard hitting matches We had some really good chemistry and it was always a pleasure to wrestle him. Also I had a blast wrestling Rob Matrix he is a great technical wrestler and he can really tell a good story as well as Billy Cole he was fun to wrestle.

WH. I have to ask my trademark questions that I always ask with these interviews. What are the positives and negatives in the Australian wrestling scene from your view?

The positives are the talent involved I truly believe if they had gotten a break or lived overseas Rob Matrix and Nixxon would be huge stars they are talented beyond belief. The wrestlers have some great work ethic and its nice to see them willing to travel to further their learning of the trade. Madison and Ryan Eagles are willing to go overseas to make a go at this business and I think its great to see them succeed I think that for the price a quality Australian wrestling show is some of the best value for money entertainment out there. The negatives of Australia wrestling is the lack of money and greed involved Shonky Promoting and the lack of scrutiny of who they let perform. The egos involved are pretty spectacular as well It seems once you have had 5 matches and people have cheered for a move you did in a match it makes you an expert above listening to any suggestions on how to improve yourself.

WH. Over your career what promotions/companies have you worked for in Canada, Australia or elsewhere?

Way too many to list North America WWF ECW Stampede ICW CRMW WFWA and others and in Australia IWA AWF PCW PWA WCWA and others

WH. You've got to tell us about your time in ECW?

It was fantastic 2 days travel week to myself I had to travel a lot by bus and I walked everywhere but I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world. It was great to work in a dressing room with no go’s where everyone was focused on the product as a whole and trying to improve everyone instead of being told you cant work for him or don’t book him because my friend thinks he’s an asshole. The crowd was so into it and they truly respected the hard work and effort that went onto making ECW what it was. I can see why they kept trying to recapture that feeling.

WH. What are your thoughts on the current WWE/TNA product?

I haven’t watched in about a year so I cant really comment but from what I read about it I would think they need to make the wrestling angles more personal and realistic

WH. If someone came up to you and asked for your help in non-wrestling roles such as promoting shows, running a training school, booking etc would you be happy to help out?

I would but I gave a try to helping out a local fed and it was just a fiasco

WH. What advice would you give anyone wanting to be a wrestler?

Laughs, Don’t. Wrestling attracts weirdoes and assholes and unless you want to put up with that everyday of your life Don’t do it Its hard on your body and its hard on your relationships.

WH. In rapping up, is there anyone you would like to thank who helped you throughout your career?

Everyone whether good or bad everyone has shape me to become the wrestler and person I became today. Lobo and Matrix Cole or Thug Hardcore or Steve Oniell I went many miles to wrestle them and they always gave me great matches and safe matches. Gerry Morrow and the US express for teaching me the basic and standing by me and letting me learn off them and letting me learn from my mistakes. Every promoter who let me live my dreams and paid me for doing it. My mom and dad and wife and kids for putting up with my wild obsession and crazy adventure e over 20 years.Chris Benot and Stu and Bruce Hart for getting me into this business. Tyson Gibbs for putting up with my out of shape self and wrestling with me until I got back into shape and Mark Mercedes and Ty Townsend for having faith in me and letting me continue wrestling when other people had given up on me. I am nothing but grateful for every moment I have had in wrestling and the people who helped me out along the way. I just wanted to say that though a lot of people have said I am a really good wrestler I was lucky enough to get some great wrestlers to work with that made me look good as well. I hope they can say that I made them look half as good as they made this bowlegged myopic clumsy guy look.

I am undeserving of this wonderful life God has given me

Wrestle Hustle would like to thank Jason Helton for his time. Stay logged on to Wrestle Hustle for more interviews from the Australian wrestling scene, thanks for reading.
